About five years ago about half of all the doctors in the US were in favor of a universal health care system paid for from federal funds and available to all, in very much the same way that Medicare now covers senior citizens. This figure has now risen to nearly two-thirds of US doctors and is continuing to rise. Many attempts have been made to provide affordable health insurance for everybody over the years and we have moved away from traditional indemnity insurance to various different schemes including HMOs, PPOs and others. Nonetheless the number of people who continue to live without health insurance remains far too high and the truth of the matter is that eventually we will be forced to do something drastic to remedy this situation.
